Sew the Trends for Spring

Sew the Trends is back for spring.. although it doesn’t feel particularly warm and spring-like just yet, it means we have a bit of time to crack on and start sewing before the warmer days arrive. So let’s see this as our chance to forge ahead as the days get longer. HURRAH! I Had a great time doing a lot of research and shortlisting some great patterns. There is a video talking through everything I discovered alongside all the pattern shortlist below!

Dresses:

Tea dress patterns featured quite heavily this season. In terms of the fabrications look for ditsy florals in bright colours, I’ve got three fantastic pattern options for you. First up is the Taika dress from Named Clothing, for something more simple checkout the Margot dress from Pattern Sewciety. Finally the Beatrix dress from Liberty for a maxi dress option.

Next up for dresses.. the short smock. This style has been around for a few years now but the length has got a lot shorter for summer. I think this would make a fantastic option for a beach cover up for summer. I’ve chosen two options one is more fitted than the other so you can pick the style you prefer. For something loose the March dress from Helen’s Closet. For something more fitted the Fleetwood dress from French Navy.

Bottoms:

I was delighted to see the dungaree back for spring as I think it’s a really versatile piece for you wardrobe. The key was the wider leg and I thought that the Riley Overalls from True Bias were the perfect pattern.

Jumpsuits:

The boiler suit shape was really popular, most of them were made in a denim or denim chambray. Lots of them featured a zipped front and all of them either had a sewn-in waistband or tie at the waist. The two patterns that instantly sprang to mind were the Leah from Fibre Mood with a zip. For something with a sewn in waistband here is the Melrose from StyleArc.

Yes… I know the cargo pant is back. Many of you that lived this first time round won’t be going back! I really like the McCalls 8206 version the shape of the leg and the paired back details gives a nod to cargo. If you’d like more classic cargo details then the Clover from Fibre Mood is a great shout.

You can’t beat a wide-legged tailored trouser, it’s bang on trend and it’ll be useful in your wardrobe for many years to come. There are two fantastic options, the Opal trousers from Fibre Mood is an easier construction with a zip at the side. The Billy from Bella Loves has loads of great details for you to get your teeth stuck into.

Skirts:

The midi denim skirt is core look for this spring and summer. Either the McCalls 8149 would work if you made it a little longer or the Bay skirt from Fibre Mood with great zip detail.

The mini is back again this summer, choose from a simple shape like the Ava from Sew Over It or the a wrap style like the Julie from I am Patterns.

Outerwear:

We all love a quilted jacket and for me this is a perfect piece for spring, it can be worn as a cardigan around the house or when it gets a little warmer a lightweight jacket. The Tamarak from Grainline is the OG and a classic shape. The Hovea from Megan Neilsen has loads of great variations to choose from.

The boxy boyfirend blazer is here again for spring and we have two fantastic options for you. The Heather blazer is great if you fancy something a little more paired back and the simpler construction is great if you are new to outerwear. The Richmond from Nina Lee has loads of great details to get your teeth stuck into and is a perfect boxy shape for spring.

The trench coat is here again for spring.. in fact it’s here every spring so now is you chance to make one! For something super classic the Isla from Named is the one to go for. If you want a more simple sew with a few less details then check out the Kara trench from Bara Studio.

Tops:

Tops for spring, we are thinking super simple but useful basics. I’ve chosen four patterns that tick most of the boxes. For a boxy t-shirt  with raglan sleeves then check out the Myka from Tessutti. For a racer backed tank top we love the Blomma from Paradise patterns. For a super classic t-shirt the Dawson Tank from Helen’s Closet. Finally the Eli T-shirt from Bara Studio.
