I love camel. It’s such a sophisticated, elegant color. I also like the versatile way camel can work with earthy neutrals, like olive and brown but also works with black and navy. I’ve been on the search for the perfect camel coat after a bunch of moths with very expensive taste buds got to my 100% cashmere Calvin Klein designer label coat. Given the versatility of the shade and how well it can work with other neutrals, I always like buying coats in this color.
Now before you close out this blog post because you are convinced you can’t wear camel because it is too yellow, remember my post on neutrals where I talked all about the different shades of camel. Before you discount it as a color you can’t wear, keep in mind there is a broad spectrum of camel shades from cooler, taupier camels to very yellow, warm ones. If you remember Ms. Demure who has summer coloring and looks best in cooler shades, I found the perfect camel for her, so it is possible to find the right shade for you.
HOW TO STYLE A CAMEL COAT: FIVE STYLISH WAYS TO WEAR A CAMEL COAT THIS FALL
If you are considering a camel coat this fall and want some tips on styling it, I have put together five different looks using five different camel coats. If you’re still shopping around, be sure to check out the additional styles at the end of this post.
Outfit #1
If I were to wear black, pairing it with camel would be exactly how I would do it. This is why I had so much fun working on Mrs. Radiant’s camel and black wardrobe capsule (post here.) In fact, this camel coat from Vince might be the exact coat she recently picked up to add to her wardrobe. Camel warms up black, making it look more elegant and less severe. This is such a basic look but one that still manages to make a strong impression. I styled the Vince coat with a basic black turtleneck, slim black trousers from Theory, and black heeled booties from Tory Burch. I finished the outfit with a cognac bag from Marc Jacobs, a camel and black scarf, stud earrings from Anna Beck, and tortoise sunglasses from Quay.
Outfit #2
I’ve been saying for years that most colors you can wear with black you can wear with any other neutral shade. Camel and burgundy combined, for example, is stunning. For years, I had a camel and teal bedroom, another favorite color combination of mine. In this look, I styled this camel coat from Lauren Ralph Lauren with a burgundy dress from BOSS Hugo BOSS and cocoa-colored boots from Vince Camuto. I finished the outfit with a scarf from Johnny Was, a teal handbag from Frances Valentine, and a burgundy beret.
Outfit #3
If you compare the camel shade in this coat from Sonia & Kyo to the last coat, you will see that this coat isn’t nearly as yellow or warm. I styled this coat with an oatmeal heather sweater and olive leggings, both from Vince, and finished the outfit with cognac booties from AGL, a camel and sand scarf from Cuyana, an olive handbag from Street Level, and an olive beanie from Rag & Bone. Another favorite color combination of mine is camel and olive. Throw in a dash of red to the mix and it’s stunning.
Outfit #4
Grey and camel is another stunning combination. This coat from Mackage is in a camel shade that is much richer, deeper, and almost cognac. A shade like this would be perfect for someone who has coloring that needs heavier tones. I styled the coat with a grey turtleneck from D. Exterior and plaid paints that have a camel deco from Theory. The look is finished with chestnut-colored pumps, a cognac handbag from Cuyana, and nutmeg drop earrings from M.M. Lafleur.
Outfit #5
This last rich, casual look harmonizes rusty orange with camel perfectly. I styled this camel coat from J.Crew with this classic cashmere sweater, also from J.Crew, and dark denim jeans from FRAME. I brought in some cool brights using this plaid scarf from Samsøe Samsøe and finished the rest of the look with these cognac booties from Soludos, a crossbody from FRAME, and hoop earring from Jenny Bird.
