Visions of China
3 May, UK
Taking place early on in the month, Visions of China is a free evening event created by the organisers of Design Shanghai, the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) and Dezeen that centres on Chinese architecture and design.
The event will start with a drinks reception followed by talks and panel discussions with special guest speakers from Design Shanghai, RIBA and Dezeen.
Design Shanghai's main event, the annual trade fair held in Shanghai, has been moved from June to October as the city is in lockdown following a coronavirus outbreak.
DesignMarch
4 to 8 May, Iceland
Now in its 14th year, Iceland's largest design fair spans the fields of architecture, fashion, interiors and graphic design.
Italian designer Tobia Zambotti, who created Couch-19, a sofa stuffed with more than 10,000 used face masks, will showcase Coat-19, a clothing item made of the same materials. Both products are designed to draw attention to the amount of plastic waste generated as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
DesignMarch's signature event DesignTalks, which is curated by Hlin Helga Guðlaugsdóttir and moderated by Dezeen's editor-in-chief Marcus Fairs, will take place at Harpa Concert Hall on 4 May.
The event will explore how designers and architects might propose alternative futures over three sessions. Speakers set to participate include architect and director Liam Young and Pentagram partner Giorgia Lupi.
London Craft Week
9 to 15 May, UK
Attendees of the British capital's annual craft festival London Craft Week can expect to see the work of 250 makers and artisans spread across 200 showrooms and exhibitions in Bloomsbury and Mayfair.
Visitors will be able to get their hands stuck into the practical side of crafts via a series of workshops, including an introduction to digital fashion with The Fabricant at Central Saint Martins college and a glasses-making workshop by British eyewear brand Cubitts at Coal Drops Yard in King's Cross.
Sustainability in crafts is a key theme this year, with a programme that focuses on innovative technologies and materials such as Circulose by Renewcell, made from recycled textile waste.
Free talks, workshops and screenings all feature in the creative programme, including a panel talk hosted by Dezeen's deputy editor Cajsa Carlson.
NYCxDesign
10 to 20 May, USA
New York's annual design gathering NYCxDesign celebrates its 10th anniversary this year with a range of events that highlight the city's creativity.
Among those hosting events or exhibiting works are German designer Dieter Rams, Swedish furniture brand Hem and graduates from New York architecture university the Pratt Institute. Alongside the exhibitions, visitors to the 11-day event can take part in open studios, public installations and panel discussions.
Meanwhile, the Brooklyn destination for NYCxDesign, Industry City Design Festival, will host a five-day-long series of pop-ups and art installations where attendees will be able to see works such as French artist Camille Walala's colourful building facade.
Anchor shows WantedDesign and the ICFF will also take place as part of the programme.
The Architect's Studio: Forensic Architecture
19 May to 23 October, Denmark
The fifth exhibition in the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art's series The Architect’s Studio centres on the work of research group Forensic Architecture.
Headed by British-Israeli architect and 2021 London Design Medal winner Eyal Weizman, Forensic Architecture acts as "an architectural detective agency", dedicated to solving crimes against civilians.
On display, there will be visualisations, models and animations that the research collective uses to conduct spatial analysis of incidents.
