BVSD cancels classes, SVVSD switches to remote learning amid forecasts for heavy snow

Boulder County residents will be greeted Wednesday morning with a fresh coat of snow — potentially the most so far this winter.

“It’s going to be a pretty good snow tonight into tomorrow morning,” Chad Gimmestad, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Tuesday evening.

Gimmestad said Boulder residents should expect to see about eight to 10 inches of snow which began Tuesday and will go through Wednesday. Longmont will have a less, with anywhere from five to 10 inches, he said.

In preparation for the blustery day, Boulder Valley School District canceled school Wednesday and St. Vrain Valley School District announced it will hold a shortened online learning day.

Both districts also canceled all before- and after-school activities for Wednesday.

Flagstaff Academy posted on Twitter announcing its closure for Wednesday. All before and after-school meetings and activities are also canceled.

The University of Colorado Boulder closed its campus Wednesday. All in-person and remote synchronous classes, which are taught live, are canceled.  No asynchronous classes or tests are delayed or canceled.

All Front Range Community College campuses are closed Wednesday. Online classes are also canceled.

Four Boulder County coronavirus testing sites will be closed Wednesday because of weather conditions.

Gimmestad said a majority of the snow accumulation will be from Tuesday night, though it will continue to snow throughout the day Wednesday. As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, one inch of snow had already fallen in Boulder, according to AccuWeather.

Winds blowing from the east began late Tuesday afternoon and picked up throughout the night, directing the snow toward the foothills, he said.

“This is more of a classic upslope snowstorm,” Gimmestad said. “The snow amounts will be quite a bit lighter east of I-25.”

Wednesday morning is expected to be about 10 degrees, with temperatures in the teens all day, Gimmestad said. Thursday morning is forecasted to be even colder with temperatures 5 degrees below zero.

Boulder County residents should expect icy road conditions Wednesday morning due to the freezing temperatures, said Ayesha Wilkinson, a meteorologist at National Weather Service.

She said Wednesday is predicated to be the largest snowfall so far this winter in Boulder. This will trump the seven inches reported Jan. 1.

“We only got four or five inches in the last two days of December,” she said. “We are going to surpass December for sure.”

Wednesday’s single-day snowfall will be close to Longmont’s record this year of six inches reported Jan. 1.
