Amazon Basics Microwave Reviewed: Should You Buy It?

The Verdict: You should buy it. This is a serviceable microwave that’s easy to use and lets you talk to Alexa. Even better, it only costs $60.

Should you buy the Amazon Basics Microwave? I did. Thanks to Amazon Prime, I was heating up leftover Orange Chicken and pizza a couple of days later.

After testing the Amazon Basics microwave, I can tell you with 100% confidence that it’s a good microwave.

When you need food or popcorn warmed up, it warms it up real good. The controls are intuitive. Its compact size is perfect for our New York City apartment’s countertops. And that’s really all I want from a microwave.

But should you buy the Amazon Basics Microwave? I would say that depends on what you want from a microwave. For reference, this is the slightly fancier microwave my girlfriend and I almost bought instead. The Classic Microwave, from Daewoo, has an awesome retro seafoam color (which would perfectly match the milkshake blender my awesome girlfriend got for my birthday).

Ultimately, we opted for the Amazon Basics microwave for one simple reason — it only costs $60.

To be clear, there are a lot of top-rated microwaves for sale on Amazon right now. Premium models like this Panasonic Microwave boast a larger capacity, turbo defrost, internal sensors and smart home integration. These microwaves can set you back anywhere from $100 to $300, and many have attractive stainless steel exteriors that will blend in perfectly with high-end kitchen appliances.

But do you really need that much microwave? I know that I don’t. And that’s really the whole idea behind the Amazon Basics program. Affordable, reliable basics from a company you trust to deliver. The Amazon coat was a ubiquitous sight here in New York City this winter, and Amazon luggage sets are a common sight at airports. This microwave brings Amazon one product closer to total retail domination.

Now, on to the negatives:

First, I’m the kind of person that doesn’t need everything I own to be connected to the internet. I have an analog watch instead of a smartwatch. I don’t need a smart umbrella, a smart trash can or a smart microwave. That’s why I thought the Alexa functionality would annoy me. At the push of a button, you can talk to your Alexa device and have her activate the microwave and its timer. My girlfriend actually really likes this feature, and it’s actually kind of nice. So not much of a negative.

This is a small microwave. With a 0.7 cubic foot capacity, it’s too small for some of our larger plates, but it can accommodate small plates and leftover containers.

And that’s it. If you’re looking for the best affordable microwave on Amazon, I would definitely recommend this product. Other Amazon customers agree. The Amazon Basics microwave reviews are extremely positive, with 4.1 stars after more than 5,000 reviews.
