Here’s an in-depth look at the Timpview T-Birds football team heading into the 2020 season.
Note: Timpview finished with an 11-4 overall record in 2019 and was tied for first in Region 7 with a 4-1 record. It was RPI seed No. 10 in the 5A playoffs, and was eliminated by Orem 21-7 in championship.
PROVO — Timpview is always a name that catches attention when surveying the Utah prep football scene, and for good reason, given the program’s stellar history, with the 2020 version hoping to add to the impressive track record.
Armed with some of the biggest names in the state, the T-Birds look potent and primed for another deep run within the playoffs and perhaps a state championship.
“We’re feeling real good about our chances,” said Timpview coach Andy Stokes. “There’s a lot of work to be put in, though, but I like the potential on this team and especially on defense.”
That defensive unit will be led by defensive back Raider Damuni and linebacker Logan Fano, along with several other standout names. Damuni will also play a big role again on offense and on special teams, much like he did a season ago.
“We feel we have some real special talents on this team, but those guys are also great leaders,” Stokes said. “I’ve been fortunate to be able to coach these guys.”
The T-Birds don’t return as much on the offensive side, but are hopeful transfer quarterback Liu Aumavae can rejuvenate the spread attack.
“We have Targhee Lambson returning at running back, and he’s a great player, and then Carsen Ryan at tight end and Hudson Aspinall at offensive line. We feel really good about all those guys,” Stokes said. “We’re young at receiver, but we like the guys who are battling for spots and believe our passing game is going to be a strength this year.”
Of course expectations are high at Timpview, with Stokes hopeful to meet those expectations.
“We had a good run last year and hopefully we can finish it off this year,” Stokes said. “Again, there’s a lot of work to be done, but I like where we’re headed and believe this team has a lot of potential.”

Coach Stokes’ thoughts on how his players dealt with the COVID-19 adversity in the spring and summer:
“Kids are resilient across the board, so I think they’ve dealt with it pretty well. Our kids have done a great job staying even — not getting too low and not getting too excited, and then they’ve been mature with it. If they don’t feel good, they don’t come to practice. It’s fine, and we’ll deal with it and be careful with everything.”

Coach Stokes’ keys for offensive success in 2020:
“We feel it’s a good group, offensively, and they’ll be tested early with the schedule we’re playing. We don’t have a lot of starters returning, but the ones we do are very good and very experienced. We just have to get the new starters caught up, and if we do that effectively, I think we can be pretty good.”

“We feel our defense is going to be our strength and really think we have the potential to be one of the best defenses in the state. We’re very talented at every position, and they just need to keep working and keeping improving, and if they do, I think we could be one of the better defenses out there. We’re super excited about the defense.”
Deseret News outlook for 2020
Timpview fields some of the most dynamic playmakers in the state, and enough of them to project a deep run in the playoffs and quite possibly a state championship. Raider Damuni is perhaps chief among those standout players, and he’ll work with others, like Carsen Ryan, Logan Fano and Targhee Lambson to bring yet another state championship back to Timpview.
