Duncan Junior Baseball Association coach Jesse Davis has been named 2022 U11 Coach of the Year by the BC Minor Baseball Association.
Davis coached several U11 teams en route to the recognition.
“It was a big surprise but very cool for sure. I coached on three different teams from house ball to prospects and AAA tier 1 summer ball last season,” Davis explained.
He was so busy, he forgot a team. He actually coached four: a Sr. Rally Cap team, a U11/Mosquito prospects team, a U11/Mosquito Cardinals house team, and the U11 AAA summer-ball Duncan Dodgers, which went to the provincials.
What’s more, Davis is also on the DJBA’s board and is the league’s equipment manager.
In his seventh year of coaching overall, Davis has coached at least four teams a year between his kids playing baseball and soccer.
“It was my second season coaching in that U11 division alongside a bunch of great coaches with great knowledge and love of the game,” Davis said. “I’d love to coach as long as I can and help the association in any way needed to help keep it a great experience for the kids so they have great memories and pass it along to their kids.”
Davis relayed his thanks to the club president Tina Baker-Cornett and all the volunteers at DJBA for making it a great place for everyone to enjoy the game.
Baker-Cornett had organized the representatives from BC Minor Baseball Association, and for his wife and kids to surprise him during recent baseball evaluations.
“He was a little bit surprised, a little bit shell-shocked,” Baker-Cornett said.
She was also surprised when she learned her nominee had won.
“I was surprised because Island organizations don’t tend to win those things. They tend to be more Mainland folks,” she said. “I’ve been here 14 years and we’ve never had one received from BC Minor Baseball. It’s kind of a big deal I think.”
Baker-Cornett said Davis is an “all-around good guy” and “goes above and beyond” for the organization and its players.
“He’s always at the park and he’s always trying to make it better for everybody,” she said.
