If your little one or preschooler is learning early math, this counting hands number learning activity is a fun and visual way to learn! Practice counting and simple math with this cute counting hands project.

Learning numbers and counting are all precursors to early math and addition. Teach  your preschoolers early math by using this fun counting hands number learning activity that shows them visually how to count.

We saw an example of this counting hand exercise first as a felt busy board page on Etsy (sorry the right source was not attributed on Pinterest or we would link to the exact page). It seemed like it could be a fun DIY so we made our own out of paper and beads!

The beads are a tactile and visual way to see how how to count, as well as the paper hands. For example, pull two beads down and bring two fingers up to coordinate with the beads.

Counting with your fingers is intuitive for kids so they will likely get the connection between the beads and number of fingers.

How do I extend this math counting hands activity for older kids?

For younger kids, we recommend counting the beads and fingers as a simple visual counting exercise. For older kids, you can write down simple math equations and ask them to count the answer in terms of how many fingers are “counted.”

For example, 2 + 3 = 5 so they would pull up 5 fingers.

You can also extend this to simple subtraction.

What can I use instead of beads to make this number counting activity?

Beads are what we had on hand, but you could thread anything that can go through a string. Like cut straws, pom poms, or wooden beads.
